On 19 and 20 September 2019, the State Hermitage hosted a conference marking the 90th birthday of Anatoly Alexeyevich Ivanov, a prominent Russian specialist on the art of Iran and leading researcher in the Hermitage’s Department of the East.
Anatoly Alexeyevich’s works on the artistic bronze of Iran and adjoining countries, Iranian and Central Asian miniatures, Iranian carpets, glyptics and jewellery, and the art of Kubachi in Dagestan are known around the world. They set a standard that will endure for many generations of Orientalists.
The subject matter of the conference was highly diverse in geographical range and material and accorded with the scholarly interests of the honouree: Iran from the Sassanids to the Kajars, the Arabic East, Central Asia and Dagestan (Kubachi). Papers were presented on artistic metal, ceramics, epigraphy and numismatics, fabrics and carpets, miniatures and drawings, weapons and jewellery.
The participants in the conference were colleagues, friends and pupils of Anatoly Alexeyevich from the Hermitage, the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, the National Library of Russia and other research institutions.
