The cultural TV channel Russia-K has broadcast the latest programme in the authorial series by Hermitage Director Mikhail Piotrovsky – “Collectors”.
2019 has become the year of collectors for the Hermitage. In the Winter Palace there is an exhibition of works from the collection of Count Pavel Sergeyevich Stroganov. A display in the Small Hermitage acquaints visitors with the Marquis Campana’s collection. The reunited collection of the Morozov brothers is on show in the General Staff building, while simultaneously Shchukin’s collection can be seen in Moscow. All the main exhibitions of the season are a tribute to the memory of those great collectors.
Without collectors neither museums, nor cultural and artistic life can exist. The actual process of collecting is incredibly interesting. But what really lies behind the accumulation of works of art – shrewd calculation with the aim of investing money, an attempt to grasp the essence of the creative process or an ungovernable passion?
The way in which celebrated European collections came into being and how their owners, who suffered misfortunes in their own lifetimes, have been exonerated by the court of history will be revealed in the latest programme of the series.
