Comment:

In January 1957, the plans for the reconstruction of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, signed by Jakub Kubicki, one of the most renowned Polish classicist architect, were discovered in the State Hermitage storage facility of prints. The project provided for a considerable increase in the castle size, its transformation in the style of Classicism and also included plans for the extension of gardens and the development of the neighbouring quarters. With the exception of some jobs performed in the gardens, these projects were never carried out. Kubicki was inspired by his predecessors’ ideas and in spite of the classicism inspired project, it retained some baroque features. These plans were probably made around 1817 or in 1818, when Kubicki intended to pull off and then erect new buildings, household outbuildings and the castle’s residential wings. At was at that time that the architect designed the palace terraces and garden extension, as well as developed the plan of streets closely linked to castle. The designs were probably sent to St.Petersburg for approval by Emperor Alexander I and remained there. Kubicki ‘s plans were marked by letters А, В, D, Е, F – it is unknown when the plan designated by letter C was lost. There was a possibility that the missing plate depicted a drawing of the front of the castle on the side of Zamkovaya Square (see Fig. on p. 40). Plate А titled ‘Plan of the Current State of the Royal Castle in Warsaw and its Surroundings’ represents the layout plan of the garden, Zamkovaya Square and the adjacent structures.
