Portrait of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, née Princess Charlotte of Württemberg, the Wife of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich of Russia

Russia, 1824

Grand Duchess Yelena Pavlovna (1806–1873) was Princess Charlotte of Württemberg until she converted to Orthodoxy before her marriage. In Russia she became a stateswoman and public figure, a supporter of the abolition of serfdom and great liberal reforms. The Hermitage portrait was painted in the year of her wedding to Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich and became the chief iconographic source for numerous depictions of her in miniatures and engravings. Actually, it was thanks to those works that Zoya Perskevich recognized the subject of the portrait, described in the inventory simply as “a young woman”, as Grand Duchess Yelena Pavlovna.
