This print may have been produced to a commission from Rubens himself in connection with his diplomatic activities. The occasion might also have been his appointment on 27 April 1629 to the post of secretary to the Spanish monarch’s Privy Council for Flanders. It is traditionally associated with a painted self-portrait that Rubens made in 1623–24, now in the British Royal Collection at Windsor.
